Video: Chris Brogan

Questions from class:

1. What are your thoughts on the new MySpace? Do you think the resurrection is going to work because it's backed by a big name (Timberlake) or do you foresee it being used primarily by musicians.  If the general public doesn't participate, do you think just the musicians & artists will be enough to sustain it?

2. I’ve noticed companies adopt various identities for Twitter and wondered which you would recommend. Some have multiple users hosting for a company's handle, like @company and anyone with access to the account can answer any question. Some have one person as the official spokesperson and make their personal information known along with their affiliation to the company. And some have multiple spokespeople that carry handles like @jessicacompany and @ericacompany. Your thoughts?

3. What would you say to people and companies that don't want embrace social media? And what do you think will be the next big step in social media?

4. What do you do to continue learning? What would you recommend for us as graduate students (your favorite Stitcher stations/blogs/ebooks/white pages that you access)?

5. I recently read this post by Seth Godin talking about making your blog interesting. How do you determine what content will be interesting to your readers?

6.  I have a personal interest in this obviously: What advice do you have for a wedding photography business to get themselves more active in social media? Also what platforms in your opinion would be best for them?

7. Which musicians would you say are doing a great job marketing themselves via social media?
What are the best tools/ways to "build an army" for a band?

8. What are some of your favorite books in different genres?  If you could write a book with any author, who would it be, and what would it be about?
9. How many social networks is the "ideal" number to use in order to reach potential audiences without stretching yourself too thin?
10. You seem incredibly busy. What tools would you recommend to organize a person's life, time, goals, etc... and what tools do you use?

Guest speaker-Meredith Cotton

Meredith Cotton was raised in Palm Harbor, FL and attended the University of Florida, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Food and Resource Economics with a specialization in Agribusiness Marketing--Grocery Retail in May of 2012. While she has always been fascinated by finance and statistics, she found her true passion in social media. Communications had always been part of her life; she was yearbook editor and lead morning news anchor in high school and founded a Greek Life Lifestyle Publication while in college.

As a new initiate of her sorority, Sigma Kappa, she was elected to the position of Vice President of Public Relations for 2010. One of her first initiatives as VPPR was to create connections and public awareness of the chapter through Twitter and Facebook. Through this initiative, she was able to connect with current sisters, chapter alumni, parents of sisters, other members of the greek community at UF, and even other Sigma Kappa chapters across the country.

Her involvement as VPPR led her to apply and be elected to Captain of Public Relations for Dance Marathon at the University of Florida. In her first year of this position, her focus was on community management of social platforms as well as creative asset creation. At the 2011 event, they raised over $713,000 for Children's Miracle Network at Shands Hospital for Children. She was elected to the position again for the following year and for the 2012 event, her focus also included creating a social community for event alumni. This involved creating and managing a Facebook page as well as reaching out and connecting with alumni that were no longer involved with the event. At the 2012 event, they raised over $816,000.

Meredith accepted the position of Social Media Coordinator with HSN in December of 2012. She is responsible for community and blog management and tactical execution of social marketing plans and events. She works across the organization to drive social media initiatives and support of the business. She also monitors effective benchmarks for measuring the impact of social media programs, and analyzes, reviews, and reports on effectiveness of campaigns in an effort to maximize results.
